September 22, 2006[popular culture] 8:32 AMIt's 10 degrees cooler than it was yesterday, another reason why autumn is my favorite season. From a geek standpoint, I also love it because it has Halloween, the new TV season, fall music releases (which are usually more substantial efforts than the summer candy), and November sweeps. - Last night we watched the premiere of CSI. I enjoy CSI, but I really enjoy it in HD, where its just insanely pretty and lovely sounding. On top of the usual bells and whistles, last night featured Cirque de Soleil and seeing that in technicolor Bruckheimer HD is almost like seeing it in person. Talk about your downer endings, though. I mean, I know its a two parter, but instead of sitting on the edge of my seat, I was slumped in my seat thouroughly depressed. Poor Catherine. - After that I hopped on the DVR and put on the premiere of The Office, which was odd. I do not like Jim and Pam so far away! I do not! And the gay issue just played weird. When I saw the episode was called "Gay Witch Hunt" I was so excited, but it was just an uncomfortable half hour elevated to weirdness by Jim's promotion. I like BJ Novak's new haircut, though. - Yesterday I went to Golden Apple and bought volumes 3 and 4 of The Walking Dead, which is the only comic (besides Calvin and Hobbes) that Boy and I both read. Does anyone else read this? Zombies over-run the world and we follow a band of survivors I actually care about. I think it rocks and constantly wonder why its not on TV. It seems primed to be a show on FX. I'm also happy to see Charlie Adlard doing such great work again, I really enjoyed his run on the first X-Files comic oh-so-many-years ago. - I'm not sure why the UK gets Scissor Sisters Ta-Dah! before us, but hooray for imports. Its definitely a different album, but it is still the Scissor Sisters. Much like the band's debut album, I love half of it, and I love 98% of the b-sides/delux edition tracks. It seems to me the best Scissor Sisters albums are Frankenstein creations. Standouts include I Don't Feel Like Dancing, Kiss You Off, Ooh, Lights, and Almost Sorry (a B-side). My personal favorite earworm is Making Ladies, a b-side that's almost like a mash-up of Weird Science and The Body Beautiful. Who knew I'd find a drag queen anthem so damn appealing? - Boy and I have become addicted to Australian Idol. We have, and I don't feel bad about acquiring it since we're never, ever, going to get it here. It's SO much better than our Idol. The contestants are more talented, the auditioners were more insane, and all three judges are smart, sassy, bitchy, and insightful. It's an actual competition. I would play to see the top 12 perform, which is something I've never entertained about our rowdy bunches. On of my standout favorites is someone who's audition I hated. Damien Leith is an Irishman living in Australia with a great falsetto who sang Damien Rice to get on the show. At first I labeled him an imitator, but the man has totally won me over. I wish I could vote. Comments
