July 19, 2006[pilot round-up: the nine] 12:44 PMWatched the pilot for The Nine the yesterday, which is going to follow Lost on ABC's this fall. Today nine people face just such an unexpected twist when they are caught in a bank robbery gone wrong and endure a 52-hour hostage standoff that will leave two persons dead. When all is said and done, these nine people will never be the same. They will always share the common bond of what happens inside the bank…which only they'll know. And they will be forever affected and intertwined because of it. Nine boasts fun people like Tim Daly (I still love and miss his last ABC show, Eyes), Scott Wolf (bye Everwood) and Chi McBride (you know Boston Public's first season was great), and some othere people who I'm sure might become "the stars of tomorrow." So how is it? Well, it seems like there are two kinds of pilots this year: shows like Standoff and Kidnapped which play out like a serial, and shows that have a traumatic event in the pilot and then the series follows the ramifications (Jericho). Nine is like Jericho, only I cared more about the people in Jericho. I was more invested. Actually, Nine is a lot like parts of Spike Lee's Inside Man, but I think only the pilot itself will be able to claim as much. The show tries too hard to get me invested, and it wasn't until the closing scene that I decided I would have to watch at least one more. Could be a huge hit, or it could be the next Commander in Chief. Next: NBC's Heroes. Comments
so, remind me again exactly how you get to watch all of these pilots and how can I get on that list?! :p Posted by: vince at July 19, 2006 2:45 PMis that john billingsly's show? Posted by: jason at July 19, 2006 2:58 PMyes, its john billingly's show, he's spastic in it, but that's the character - who tries his best to be the new happy-dappy John Locke. It helps to know film critics, tv critics, and other such people who get things early. as an aside, NINE uses a temp score of thomas newman's Angels in America, which I found oddly sacriligious. Somethings you just don't poach. Posted by: kyle at July 19, 2006 3:37 PMBlood is thicker than water... Mable Posted by: Mable at November 21, 2006 6:23 AMOne today is worth two tomorrow...
