[kavalier & clay] 5:14 PM

Finally, an update on Kavalier and Clay from Michael Chabon's blog:

The fate of this project--whether it will move at last from the nebulousness of pre-pre-production into really-truly pre-production, with a budget and cast and everything, will be decided on or around 12 July 2006. Miss Natalie Portman is a strong likelihood for the part of Rosa; other casting is ongoing, as are work on the script (a lot of cutting) and tests conducted by a number of top-drawer animation studios (for the comic book elements). Quick answers (as of this date): Golem: yes. Antarctica: yes. Gay love story: yes. Ruins of World's Fair: no. Long Island: no. Orson Welles: no. Salvador Dali: yes. Loving reference to Betty and Veronica: no. Stan Lee: no.

And from a previous post:

This Scott Rudin production has recently entered a status that some of those involved have referred to as "pre-production" or, more conservatively, "pre-pre-production." Key elements, such as Production Designer Patrizia von Brandenstein and Costume Designer Ann Roth, have begun work. Initial creative design for the comic-book elements of the film--of which there are many--is being done by certified genius Paul Pope, which is, in the general opinion, way cool. Casting has begun, with no roles yet cast as of today.

Though the production has by no means been greenlighted, prospects for this long-running, oft-moribund project are suddenly looking better than they ever have before.

If one is a bit in the dark, feel free to check out The Amazing Website of Kavalier & Clay. The film is set to be directed by Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) for Paramount.

Jason and I have been discussing it, and while we agree with Portman, we're not so hot on old rumors about Tobey Maguire for Sam and Jamie Bell for Joe. Ditch Tobey and give me Justin Long.

I still think it should be an HBO miniseries, and I still hold firm that Tracy Bacon is the sexiest literary figure in history.

Comments

I'm ridiculously excited about the *idea* of this movie being made. Also, the prospect of Natalie Portman doing something that might be a role that might help her resurrect her status as an actress (from the horribleness of nearly everything she's done since "Leon"), is nice too.

Thanks for the update!

Have you heard "Lisa" from The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers?

Check it out, I think you might like it. The song is written from the prespective of an imaginary friend and how they feel when they are forgotten...great lyrics. You can listen to it on my site austintome.blogspot.com

I really enjoy your site
