[a night in los angeles] ^{3:23 PM}

Last Week

It seems that when the phone rings and you pick it up on autopilot, well, that's when you get bad news. Such is the case of last week: Our friend and karaoke partner Jason was hit by a car. He was hit by a car. Jason the pedestrian.

While he was walking to his very own car with his brother and friends in tow, a car (driven by someone who thankfully did not flee the scene, but stupidly rammed my friend) hit him going 40 miles an hour. Jason was pulled up onto the windshield, then Idiot Driver slammed on his brakes, thus throwing my dear Jason 20 feet onto Santa Monica Boulevard.

And nothing was broken.

Miracle? Yes. Nevertheless, Jason spent a night in the hospital while his friend Rini made Important Calls to Friends. Nothing broken, no concussion, just a few scrapes and bruises, and one horribly terribly sore body. We bring Jason things like Buffy on dvd, food, and boba, and we try to alleviate his pain by being funny, but not too funny because laughing hurts.

Last Night

So Boy and I get comped in to see Tom's new show, a rock musical playing at the Vanguard. We go, get free lighters (one would assume for the heartfelt power ballad finale), and walk into a cavernous room filled with people and no place to sit. This wasn't any indie underground show, this was a packed house of A&R types. Grey hair in pony tails. Goatees. The people you see accurately represented as moronic It People on Entourage.

We debated leaving, but our fate was sealed when a large girl (who, given what she was wearing, somehow thought she was a pixie) came tumbling down the aisle towards the backbar proclaiming how obliterated she was going to get before the show started (that would be T-minus 3 minutes). We left.

We realize that we've magically parked right by Jason's house, so we call and offer to bring food. He gladly accepts and we go to Subway.

Boy has very few fears in life, but one of them is scary bathrooms. In addition to food, Boy wants to buy Tilex to help a brotha out. I get food, and he goes on a cleaner run, but the Stop'n'Go has no Tilex, just a machine that proclaims to produce nacho cheese. The decision is made to walk down 2 blocks to the Rite Aid at Gower Gulch (a stripmall on Sunset that has been painfully art directed to look like a Western town).

We approach the Rite Aid, talking as we do, when we notice a police car and a police officer. Mr. Officer has his gun out, and soon we see his friends Officers 2, 3, and 4. And hey, they have guns, too!

What's the best use for an SUV besides hauling furniture? Hiding from bullets, obviously.

We never find out what exactly happened, just that te officers spoke as if they were Samuel L. Jackson in a Tarantino film, and that two people wound up in the back of a policecar.

We go inside, buy Tilex, go to Jason's and eat.

An hour of Battlestar that was better than expected (after last week's shitfest), and friday is done.

Oh, the adventure of it all.
