November 15, 2005[a magic apple] 12:16 PMAn so we made our way into the Magical Musical Valley to partake in movie night. The featured presentation being a horror I had never known existed: The Apple. By now you are either laughing, groaning, or asking "What is The Apple?" The Apple rivals Xanadu as a warped vision of musical reality. It truly must be seen to be believed, a jaw-dropping, glitter-soaked musical experience that actually shows time and devotion to (not horrible) music and (truly horrific) dance. People rehearsed this. People put up money for this. People watched dailies for this. People released this. It's a true wonder, and a testament to the power of cocaine in 1980. Legend has it that when the film was screened at Paramount (now El Capitan theatre) people began flinging their free soundtrack LP's at the screen. Almost more shocking than the film's content itself is the rather excellent transfer the dvd has, and the fact that only 4 copies remain available at Amazon. Sore from laughter, and full from appropriate concessions (apple cinnamon popcorn, caramel apples, apple martinis, apple pie), we made our way back over the hill for home. I still can't go past Universal without humming Jurassic Park or Back to the Future. It seems while we were gone an eerie mist had settled over Hollywoodland, making one wary of prehistoric creatures, and making every approaching car seem like evil incarnate: Comments
