Out of curiousity, given the many of you that know the variety of my painting, would you mind just commenting below on which "style" you prefer the most?

Messy Watercolor on Paper
Controled Watercolor on Paper
Watercolor on Canvas
Mixed Media on Canvas

Ooh, this is a toughie.

I am going to have to go with Mixed Media, but Controlled is a very close second.

I'm all about the mixed up media...

Posted by: Lukey at September 26, 2005 11:14 PM

They all have their distinct charms, of course. I'm always amazed at what you can pull out of the "messy" style. The one you posted as the example is fantastic for instance. But the ones that seem the most "polished" are the mixed media examples. Your Breakfast Club piece, and "Bipolar" are two of my favorite pieces by you. I've been impressed by something in every style though. If I had to choose I would say Mixed Media, but that's with the caveat that I view this as a damned if you do, damned if you don't sort of choice.

i'm going to agree with jason.

i would say that i think all of your styles work for you depending on the subject matter. i think it really does come down more to subject matter than anything else.

i think that the reason that messy watercolor on paper is my least favorite of the four is that it always seems to be the one used for your less intense pieces.

i likes me some angsty rage : )

controled, mixed.

Posted by: David at September 27, 2005 12:16 AM

Honey. Fuck our opinion. What speaks to you?

Posted by: k1rk at September 27, 2005 12:23 AM

I'm a fan of the messy watercolors.

Posted by: Bob at September 27, 2005 12:41 AM

Watercolors are made I think for Paper so those two watercolors are my fav.

Posted by: geno at September 27, 2005 1:41 AM

Controled Water Color and Mixed Media.
I love your art! And so you've got yourself a fan way south from where you live. Down in South America. I'm from Argentina. :)

Use whatever fits the moment, the idea, the materials to hand, what's the point in constraining yourself too much?

Posted by: Andrew at September 27, 2005 5:26 AM

Hey Kyle!

A friend told me about your art, so now I am going to write a little project about you. Your art is so childish and simple in a good way, I like it! I wondered if you please could write a little about your art, and what it is that inspires you..? You could send it to my mail, madrille_86@hotmail.com -Marit-

Controlled watercolor on paper and mixed media on canvas.

Posted by: Emily at September 27, 2005 9:11 AM

I'm going to have to go with either Waiting or Controlled.

Posted by: Dan at September 27, 2005 9:16 AM

Mixed media, baybeeeee!

Posted by: schtzo at September 27, 2005 10:08 AM

Controlled on paper.

Posted by: Silus Grok at September 27, 2005 10:30 AM

Controled and mixed media, can't really decide

Posted by: Steven at September 27, 2005 10:41 AM

messy watercolor..yay.

Posted by: matt at September 27, 2005 10:44 AM

I haven't posted a comment here before but am an avid reader of your site and really enjoy your art. I'm torn between the controlled watercolor on paper and the mixed media on canvas. I agree with what others have said, these seem so much more intense and personal, and the use of color is beautiful. They seem more moody - not necessarily dark moods, but show a wider variety of emotion. This is my own personal opinion of course. :)

mixed or messy, but maybe that's just those particular pictures?

Posted by: PJ at September 27, 2005 2:37 PM

I like them all. One question is whether the mixed media pieces will last (will the paper pieces peel up?).

Posted by: homer at September 27, 2005 4:26 PM

mixed and messy, hands down.

Posted by: hampton at September 27, 2005 6:28 PM

the mixed media pieces SHOULD last, since they're double coated with a glaze. assuming no one begins to peel at them, or put them in direct sunlight for 20 years...

Posted by: kyle at September 27, 2005 6:56 PM

I think mixed is my favorite, but that's because it's one of my favorites to do. You've got great watercolor sills, and I love the 'messy' watercolor. So that's numero dos.

Posted by: Steven at September 27, 2005 9:09 PM

It appears I'm the only person whose favorite is watercolor on canvas.

Posted by: sleepy kev at September 28, 2005 1:36 AM

Controlled water color for teh win! (Yes, the "teh" is intentional)

Posted by: Fabian at September 28, 2005 4:18 AM

It's all very recognisably "you", and they've all got their own charms. I think the main difference comes down to - as someone else said - how the pieces on paper are more fun and light-hearted (especially the messy watercolours), while the canvas stuff tend to be more moody; the faces of Kyle, you might say.

In either case, your stuff rocks big socks - keep it up, yo. :)

This is like asking whether I prefer a double quarter pounder with cheese or "chicken" mcnuggets. Give me both! With fries!

(but if you need an answer: mixed media)

Posted by: Aaron at September 28, 2005 12:39 PM

mixed media. by far. But I'm definitely not saying the others are bad...I like them all. Just like mixed media more.

Posted by: liz at September 28, 2005 8:35 PM

Controlled watercolor on paper.

Posted by: Kevin at September 28, 2005 8:43 PM

ranking numero uno favorita would have to be mixed media on canvas. watercolour on canvas and controlled watercolour on paper come in tied at second and messy watercolour in third. controlled watercolour and mixed media give off a more polished/sophisticated vibe whereas messy watercolour and watercolour on canvas gives off a more carefree light-hearted vibe ;)

Posted by: Claudia at September 28, 2005 10:02 PM

i like all ehm, can't pick, but if i had to i'd say mixed media on canvas is numero uno favorita, controlled watercolour on paper and watercolour on canvas are tied in second, and messy watercolour comes in a close third. your mixed media on canvas and controlled watercolour on paper give off a more polished/sophisticated vibe whereas your messy water colour on paper and watercolour on canvas gives off a more light-hearted and carefree vibe. by the way "defying gravity" and "waiting line" are two of my fave pieces by you.

Posted by: Claudia at September 28, 2005 10:05 PM

ooops i commented twice..... relatively the same thing twice......... ok commented 3 times now

Posted by: Claudia at September 28, 2005 10:08 PM

I vote mixed media on canvas- those always seem to have a mix of three or four different emotions- funny, sad, sweet, dry, longing, very adult angst, childlike wonder - it's a different mix everytime- and that tends to make me very happy... everytime.

Posted by: Mike at September 29, 2005 9:44 AM

I also choose (E.)
I love your pencil drawings too.

Posted by: Mike at September 29, 2005 9:47 AM

mixed media on canvas and then controled watercolor on paper

Posted by: amy at September 29, 2005 3:41 PM

Mixed Media first, Controled Watercolor second

Posted by: Will at September 29, 2005 8:44 PM

you know me. total mixed media fan.

Posted by: Hector at September 30, 2005 9:59 AM

Eek, I'm late to the party here, Ky -- (my, look how many turned up) -- but seems I'm pretty much in line with popular opinion (a rarity). Mixed media suits you, controlled tends to be better than messy, but you should (continue to) use what you want to get the effects you want. Valentin remains my favourite after all this time -- what "style" was he?

Posted by: matt at September 30, 2005 6:34 PM

Mixed media and controlled on paper :)

Posted by: Zach at October 3, 2005 12:28 AM
