September 19, 2005[kitchen and the city] 8:31 PMI really, really, really want to like Kitchen Confidential. I like Bradley Cooper. I like Sex and the City. I like John Frances Daley and Nicholas Brendon. I like that they have work. But this thing suffers from serious pilot trouble. Somewhat oblviously I told Boy that it was like the Sex and the City pilot. So uneven, so full of potential, so cringe inducing 5 years later. Then I realized that Darren Star was in charge of it and my heart rose and sank. There is hope. What's most peculiar about the show is that it was slated to be, for a while, David Fincher's next project after Panic Room. Having never read Anthony Bourdain's book (on which the series is based), I can't tell easily it was translated to a single-camera comedy, so if you have let me know. How I Met Your Mother also screams "potential" but the amount of canned laughter mixed with the studio audience isn't making me think the show is funnier. In fact, HIMYM would probably work best ala Arrested Development, which keeps rockin' along without any studio audience to speak of. Comments
KC has pretty much exactly NOTHING to do with Bourdain's book other than sharing a few general concepts: "enormous contempt between the back of house & front of house staff" and "chefs like sex and drugs." I'm sure they'll mine it for anecdotes and storylines and such as time goes on. I thought the pilot was pretty good, though. It was funnier than I thought it was going to be, if a bit on the generic side. Still, it clearly had some potential. That John F Daley kid sure grew up nicely, for one thing.
