I'm really sick of posters with giant faces. There is an art in the extreme close up, but I don't think anyone working in key art has mastered it.

I beg to differ. Two examples come to mind:

Scream (http://www.impawards.com/1996/posters/scream.jpg) & Dead Again (http://www.moviegoods.com/Assets/product_images/1020/221950.1020.A.jpg)

i'll gladly give you SCREAM, then point out how redundant the CURSED poster is — seeing as how it's a Willamson/Craven production with a woman prominently on monochromatic display.

I'd argue that the Silence of the Lambs poster with Jodie Foster's face and the Death's Head moth over her mouth was highly effective. It echoed the book, promoted the lead actress and was both creepy and memorable.

A, but you see Heather, the amazing placement of the death head moth, the SOTL poster ceased being just a giant face, and became a design element. I don't think coloring eye glasses counts as design aesthetic, espeically not on a bad photo.
