I capped off my very short and impromtu trek into the LA Film Festival with Promedio Rojo, a debut from Chile by a 22 year old filmmaker involing a high school geek and his quest for love.
On paper, hell, even out loud, this film seemeed to have everything going for it. I like foreign movies, I like high school movies, I like silly humor and I really enjoy me some superheroes, especially when employed in fantasy sequeneces that have some money behind them.
But it just didn't work. For me. A lot of people seem to really love this movie, but I can't get over how something like this could so completely leave me wanting.
The problem is that while he desperately wants to make a mainstream film, a Latin American Pie as Lopez proclaims, what's he's really done is create a niche film with outstanding production values. This isn't the tale of the everyday outsider or a band of misfits, this is the story of being a fat comic book kid in a South American high school, a movie where you're not even inclined to root for the protagonist unless you yourself were a fat comic book kid, preferably in a South American high school. This isn't a coming of age film, it's a revenge film.
I watch a lot of movies, a lot of foriegn movies too, and I can almost always find something to relate to, something to hang on to, and often I'm the guy trying to defend an aspect of a less-than-stellar film to my friends, but I just can't with this one. It's not that it's a bad film at all, but I just had nothing to grab onto — and when I can't grab onto superheroes or feeling like an outcast in high school, you know something is amiss.
The only thing of the evening that made me laugh uproariously was seeing the director pantomime the art of "raising money" by giving a producer fellacio, something that I'm sure has never happened on the DGA main stage before. In front of an audience, at least.
I'll be very interested to see what Lopez does when he grows up/refines his humor and storytelling, but until then my mind will forever be scarred with the image of "how to do an abortion" taking place in a grocery store produce isle.
The night wasn't a total bust, tho. Click here to watch Tom Cruise pull a Palpatine on Oprah.
