One of the perks of living in LA (or New York) is that there are preview screenings, press screenings, and friends who attend both when you don't. I've gotten reports that Fantastic Four is like a giant episode of Charmed with a moderately larger budget, and I've gotten two reports on War of the Worlds.

While the Charmed/Four analogy didn't surprise me in the least, I was surprised at 2 people labeling WotW a "masterpiece" and "scary as hell."

Let's try, just try, to imagine that Tom Cruise isn't the new millenium's Michael Jackson for a moment and think about WotW. Spielberg hasn't made a fun as hell movie since Jurassic Park, and dammit I want one. If Star Wars can go out with a (only good the first time) bang, and if Batman can be resurrected, then surely Stevie can bring some game. I mean, it looks like all the pieces are in place.

-Small cast struggling to survive (Jaws)
-Endearing little girl (ET)
-Horrific Global desolation (Saving Private Ryan)

Plus I got John Williams' score last night, and it sounds like a Dolby 5.1 episode of The Twilight Zone on acid.

I really really hope it's good. I really really hope Tom doesn't screw it up. Word is the movie is so engrossing that Tom isn't a "problem" like he is in the trailers. I need some Spielberg magic. I don't want anymore Catch Me If You Cans and Terminals. I want aliens, and dinosaurs, and struggling Spielbergian families trying to survive. Give me adventure (and next time, skip Tom — any Tom).

I'm reading the book right now (incredibly good, by the way), and I'm be SEVERELY disappointed if TommyBoy screws this up. I've seen a few of the liberties that they're making with the movie (in the trailers) and am unimpressed so far. But if people who've actually seen it disagree, I hope I'm wrong!

I really hope FF can hold its own and is the start of a potentially good franchise. I don't like the comedic part of the film (based on the trailers) considering what Batman Begins has done for batman. That's a work of art right there. It made batman human and someone I could be trully scared from in the real world.
As for WotW, Tommy is hit or miss. Spielberg is hit or miss...lately he mostly misses. er. WotW is something I'm not dying to see but it is something I'd go see just becuase of the hype.

That's so funny that you said that about Star Wars. Matt and I saw it together for the 2nd time and both agreed it wasn't as good.

In a tenuously-related note, did you see Spielburg trashing the media for pouncing on Tom-n-Katie's amour? It's like, what do you expect when America's Biggest Movie Star(TM) starts acting retarded about someone half his age?

I want to see WotW DESPITE TC. Spielberg has been just another businessman hack lately. It looks like that childlike love of the movies might not be dead in him after all. But TC might ruin it though. His inability to own up or to even answer reporters questions about the effect his behavior is having on the film rivals Bush on his best day. He's literally batshit crazy delusional. I just fear that if the film does well he will take that as a vindication that his behavior has been acceptable. Sad. But the real disaster movie is Katie. I have a feeling the backlash to this charade will involve aliens, dinosaurs, and struggling to survive in her career.
