June 17, 2005[aftershocked] 9:29 AMI sleep naked. Not all the time, but I do. Sometimes I fall insleep in my clothes, sometimes I want to decieve myself into thinking it's winter and I put on reindeer pajama bottoms, but more often than not, I sleep naked. This has never really been an issue, but now it's become something to seriously consider. There have been three earthquakes this week. One on sunday, one the other day that promoted a tsunami warning (which was just ... odd) and one yesterday morning. With the exception of the tsunami warning (which interrupted a TNT rerun of Law & Order), I've been asleep for all of them. I haven't felt them at all, and my running joke at sunday brunch was that the 3.0 was probably incorporated into a rather lustful dream I was having. Some people are saying it's an odd week, and some people are saying that these quakes are a countdown to something bigger. Yet again, where I live is putting me in mortal danger and the one who's most concerned about this is my mother. In DC it was death from above, and here in LA it's death from below. Not much I could do about either, but one thought constantly plagues me now: do I sleep naked? Let's say there's a 7.3 in Burbank, just over the hill. That's a tad choas inducing, and quite literally earthshaking. Let's say it happens while I'm asleep, and the movement is so jarring that I'm woken up and must quickly find myself to the nearest doorway. Well, I live in a studio, so there's kinda a lack of doorways, so the obvious answer is I make my way to the main doorway what faces out into the courtyard. But I can't do this naked. (I could, but, y'know) I've started keeping a pair of shorts next to my bed, and a t-shirt. These are the things that bother me. Comments
I think in the event of a 7.3, a little disater nudity is acceptable. Posted by: Todd at June 17, 2005 12:44 PMFrom the Earthquake Myths page of the California Department of Conservation: "The safest place to be in an earthquake is under a doorway. That's true only if you live in an unreinforced adobe home. In a modern structure the doorway is no stronger than the rest of the building. Actually, you're more likely to be hurt (by the door swinging wildly) in a doorway. And in a public building, you could be in danger from people trying to hurry outside. If you're inside, get under a table or desk and hang on to it." http://www.consrv.ca.gov/index/Earthquakes/qh_earthquakes_myths.htm Posted by: Ben at June 17, 2005 2:22 PMForget about the clothes - put a flashlight under your bed. The freakiest part of the '94 middle of the night quake was the darkness. (Just my opinion) Posted by: AC at June 17, 2005 2:37 PMKyle, As a life long Los Angelino, I welcome you. I think youve been in our massive suburb for a few months now, but in a way, this is an initiation process. Now, lets examine your concerns with some helpful answers and a dash of flirtation. I sleep naked. Thats hot. Not all the time, but I do. Sometimes I fall insleep in my clothes, sometimes I want to decieve myself into thinking it's winter and I put on reindeer pajama Aww, thats so cute. Although, we dont have winter here, only fall and summer. There have been three earthquakes this week. One on sunday, one the other day that promoted a tsunami warning (which was just ... odd) and one yesterday morning. With the exception of the tsunami warning (which interrupted a TNT rerun of Law & Order), I've been asleep for all of them. Some of us would to hear about this dream Let's say there's a 7.3 in Burbank, just over the hill. That's a tad choas inducing, and quite literally earthshaking. Let's say it happens while I'm asleep, and the movement is so jarring that I'm woken up and must quickly find myself to the nearest doorway. Pray for me. Literally, I am packing to move from Westwood to Burbank right now. This reply is kind of a break. Okay, so far Ive put in a lot of flirting and not much help. So I guess I should give some serious advice now. Forget the shorts and shirt. If a strong earthquake hits, like a 7.3 in Burbank, then you might have trouble getting out of bed. When the Northridge earthquake hit and I was just a wee lad of 13, I had more trouble getting out of bed than anything else. I got tangled in my sheets. Remember, your bed with be moving also. So it will be hard to get to safety during the actual earthquake. So starts sleeping in your underwear at least and as someone else said, keep a flashlight. Posted by: Fabian at June 17, 2005 3:01 PMfind a good table/desk, which im sure you have plenty of & cower there nude or not. looking around my room, i'm gonna have to kick my shoes out from under my futon just to provide any protection there.... Posted by: chris at June 17, 2005 10:29 PMis it wrong to think about bringing my iMac underneath with me? Posted by: kyle at June 18, 2005 12:16 AM...Believe me... The 1st earthquake i was asleep and having a dream ...the straneg thing was that this voice in my dream kept telling me to get out...and as I was opening my eyes ...i had one foot on the ground when i felt the earthquake ...I thought it was a dream ..obviously it wasnt. I dont know if it was my conciousness or fairies...but something fishy happened that morning ..still get the chills!~ Posted by: Bosie at June 18, 2005 2:23 AMI used to fear neighbours who lived above me... with leaking bathtubs that would drip through the ceiling in my sleep. You know what I am talking about. ;) Posted by: Jason at June 18, 2005 4:19 AMAll the earthquake rules change at night. The safest place to be is usually in bed. You have covers on top of you to protect you from breaking things. If you get up to run for a doorway you will probably 1) Fall down from a) just having woken up or b) the moving ground c) both OR 2) Will cut your feet from broken glass (beer bottles, bongs, candles of the Virgin Mary) . So stay in bed and ride it out. Knowing that you are in the right place may cut a bit of the panic out of the experience too and allow you to reach over, grab the laptop and slide it under the covers with your naked self. PS Always plan for earthquakes when putting your eyeglasses down before sleeping. Finding the underwear in the pile of debris is much easier when not legally blind.
