May 29, 2005["life" drawing] 4:05 AMI love lifedrawing, nudes especially (get your mind out of the gutter). Back when I was still in school (way back when, like last fall) I kept begging the Powers That Be to let me take another class as an elective. Alas, it wasn't to be. I wish there were more places to draw people in LA. There's no subway here (technically, there is, but it's not a real subway like Cully gets to draw on), and people react very strangely to the thought of posing. People almost immediately think of it as some kind of come-on for sex, and I've never even mentioned nudity during the oh-so-casual, "do you think I could draw you sometime?" moment (a question that comes up very rarely btw. It's not like I'm skimming the bars propositioning people). At first I thought all the preening and posing of the WeHo-folk would work to my advantage, but alas the modern-day male darts about ever so slightly, like a hummingbird with tourettes. So, what's a boy to do? Well, I try to satisfy my need for models by scowering Friendster, MySpace and some other...less than linkworthy sites. But y'know what? They suck. It blows drawing off something on the monitor. There's no sense of depth and dimension, there's no "sport" in it. If someone wants to pose for me, let me know. If someone knows of a life-drawing group or workshop in LA, let me know. On a related note, you'll find it humorous that my mother has all of my female lifedrawings back home. She claims they're among her favorite things I've ever done. Comments
Tell me about it! My metro-sexual aussie boyf will spend hours in front of the mirror preening but refuses to pose for me for drawing - no matter how big I say his "guns" are! Go figure. Sydney's good for life drawing tho - the Art Bar in the city does life drawing for free once a week and you get to drink a glass of wine while you sketch. It is however PACKED OUT nearly every week! Posted by: katherine at May 29, 2005 6:58 AMBeing that I'm kind of bored, even though I live in DC and know nothing about life drawing, I did a little googling on your behalf: http://www.laaa.org/calendar/workshops.html If I were anywhere in the area, I'd pose. I know how hard it is to find people. I guess that's the nice thing about school, you can always coax people into something. My favorite place to observe people is the airport, but with the lock-downs and all that jazz, it's less of a relaxed zone... and people are always moving. Posted by: Steven at May 29, 2005 9:48 AMyou're a princess, liz (and i have to say that a backdoor lifedrawing studio on Hillhurst is either going to be really hot or really wierd) Posted by: kyle at May 29, 2005 3:16 PMI'd let you draw me. Anytime you're in Houston...let me know. jakey...wooooooooooossshhh!!! Posted by: jake at May 29, 2005 5:01 PMsubways are the best place for people watching, every walk of life passes through and all most spending the journey only in there own heads. one if my life goals is to write a book of subway stories. but i'd have to move back to to a town with subways. if i ever get around to it, you wanna illustrate it? Posted by: alison at May 29, 2005 10:22 PMI can pose for you ...I am an artist myself so I understand... I live In Long Beach How about if I sent you a video? Y'know, avi/mov/etc, no? Or there must be a way to make one of those stereoscopic (?) images, so you can get a perception of some depth too, no? Hmm... well, if I end up in L.A., or you in Montreal, you've got yourself a poser! ;) Posted by: Frank at May 30, 2005 1:46 PMLet me know if that studio posted on craigslist is actually a front for some kinda crazy sex shop or something else equally weird. Wow, I've been watching too much Law & Order this weekend...gotta love the holiday weekend marathons. Posted by: Liz at May 30, 2005 6:41 PMi'd let you draw me, but let's face it.. i'm not gorgeous. and i look like i'm 12. it'd get weird.. plus we've never ever met. that makes it downright creepy. Posted by: hersch at May 31, 2005 1:42 AMI'll go rent Titanic, and get all "Kate Winslet-ed" up, then you can draw me. Of course, I say Kate Winselt-ed, but I'm a 40 year old guy, with tons of body issues, but hey it would be something different. LOL!!!!
