YOUR SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL:

What year was it?
1999

What were your favorite bands?
Third Eye Blind, Garbage, Sarah McLachlan, and Marilyn Manson's "Mechanical Animals" albums were all getting heavy play.

What was your favorite outfit?
I had a favorite pair of jeans and blue velvet-ish shirt. I have no idea why I loved it so much, and I actually just got rid of it in december when I cleaned out my closet pre-move to LA.

What was up with your hair?
The standard black/brown, and as you can see above for a time it was orangey. Then we figured out how to properly bleach it, and for a time it was blue. Oh, I made the mistake of shaving it too.

Who were your best friends?
Megan McCarl, Michael Harkins, Lauren Smith, Kurt Rutledge, Holly Darsey.

What did you do after school?
I usually went over to someone's house and we'd hang out. Lauren lived next door to the kid that Megan baby-sat afterschool, so that was a place to go. If my dates are correct, then I was working at Kroger for part of my senior year. Megan actually trained me. I wound up being a manager with my friend Tony, had my first gay boss (of many), and Megan worked in the floral department with our friend Holly.

Did you take the bus?
No, I broke free of the evil yellow-hold my sophomore year. In 98-99 I was in my maroon Mazda 626. The driver's side doors had to be replaced because of an accident (which I still firmly believe wasn't my fault).

Who did you have a crush on?
Oh, Matt...

Did you fight with your parents?
Not really. I never really have. My parent's are great, but at times my father and I can do a pretty good version of "petulant child."

Who did you have a CELEBRITY crush on?
I had an Ethan Embry poster hanging in my locker.

Did you smoke cigarettes?
Nope. Didn't really drink either.

Did you lug all of your books around in your backpack all day because you were too nervous to find your locker?
I knew where my locker was: inconvenient-land. Luckily my senior schedule was pretty great, and I was only burdened with algebra and english books.

Did you have a 'clique'?

LtoR: Jason, Megan, Michael, Katie, Maria, Kurt, John-Paul, Lauren, Mark, Allison, Michelle, and me before Prom

I had my friends, and I guess we thought we were ok. We met every morning in a hallway by a stairwell. I'm not sure why we met there, I can't recall any of us having class near it. Kurt and I would have to walk all the way across campus to get to first period art, but after 4 years of having the same teacher it was ok if we strolled in late. Sometimes really late. With donuts.

Did you have "The Max" like Zach, Kelly, and Slater?
Chili's? Denny's? Yeah, Denny's, but it took front and center more that summer with our 1am visits.

Who did you want to be just like?
At my school? I didn't want to be like anyone, I just wanted to sleep with them.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
A cartoonist/illustrator guy. An attractive Tim Burton.

Where did you think you'd be at the age you are now?
Y'know, there is a path of logic where I could say "Hollywood," which is where I am. I don't think I really knew then where I wanted to be, I just knew that I wanted to be mildly successful and hopefully out of college. Looks like I'm making good on both fronts (but "mildly successful" needs a little more "success" in it).

And for the hell of it, I think my schedule was: Art, Government, Economics, Algebra II, Lunch, English, Peer Mentoring, Art, and Radio/TV.

Yes, I had art twice a day, a lovely arrangement that freed me from taking a required foreign language course. After Columbine the bomb threats always got called in during third period, so for a good deal of april and may, I spent Algebra II outside while police searched the school.

Now scroll down and pay attention to the new paintings.

Wait, that second photo can't be older than last year, is it? ;-)
