[sundance: one in the air equals two on the ground] 7:08 PM

Now, I have been keeping up with the illustrated journal, but so much happened last night, there's no way one (let alone 5) drawings could accurately sum it up.

Last night was my third Scissor Sisters show with Paul, Jimmy, and his boss David. In Utah. In a strip mall. On the outskirts of town.

I have now seen every homosexual in Utah fit inside one room, and that one room was an oddly-cool venue called Suede, which was right next to a discount haircutters and a Wendy's.

The crowd, after a band-conducted surveyed, seemed evenly divided between New Yorkers, Angelinos and Utah's finest. It's really easy to pick out the Utah boys from the rest. The Utah boys actually look at me, while everyone else looks through me.

The Little Venue That Could was packed, and the band put on a great show, even tho we had to suffer through an opening act called Hey Will Power. The CD might actually be ok, I'm going to give them that, but the stage show ... well, you could spot who was on drugs by who was cheering. When I turned around to see where Paul had gone in the crowd I saw John Cameron Mitchell and Alan Cumming (and if someone makes a name-dropping comment, so help me god. you fuckers all ASKED me to tell you who I saw after I moved). Some tall assholes pushed infront of us, limiting our view, but I got to rock out with Hedwig and Nightcrawler, so it evens things out.

Their performance of "Comfortably Numb" was the best I've ever heard. It went on forever, and I kept dancing forever, and the mirrorball kept spinning, the lights kept changing, and it's totally how they should've rocked the fuck out of SNL, but alas. Still, amazing.

Concert Highlights:
- Learning the mysterious non-band-member keyboardist is named J.J.
- Ana Matronic breaking up a fight between two girls in the front row
- "Just because I don't eat pussy, doesn't mean it doesn't need to get Ett."
- Seeing british Katie rockout hardcore
- Griding with a thirtysomething lesbian during "Take Your Mama"
- Hearing them perform their cover of "Take Me Out" as the encore
- "Remember Miss Thang, one in the air equals two on the ground. Watch your liquor Miss Thang, otherwise you might wind up in bed with Harvey Wienstein tomorrow morning. Remember Princess Leia in that gold bikini in Jedi?"
- "I don't care if you're worth twenty million or worth twenty cents, I want you all to rock out like your dream project just got financed."
- "There's a man up front here wearing a shirt that says 'Love is for Losers.' Sir, if that's true, then I hope I'm the biggest fucking loser there is."
- "This concert is a washing machine, and all you beautiful people, you are all sweaters and panty hose. I want to see you spin around and mix up!"

Jimmy ran into some friends from England at the show (since Sundance is the weirdest hodgepodge of people ever) so we found ourselves playing at the after party. Paul had been sick most of the week, but after Ana touched him, he was miraculously healed.

It was a great night, but a long night. Beds are nice.

Man all this walking around wears you out, and honestly, I think one vodka redbull in the mountains equals THREE on the ground...

Pffft... name drop all you want to, kiddo. You're at SUNDANCE! It's your right! ;)

One of these days I shall see the S.S. live. They guest-hosted the Wedge on MuchMusic the other night, and were talking about how much they love Canadians because they often feel perceived as "that gay band" in the States, whereas in Canada they don't feel it so much.

That makes me wanna see 'em even more.

OMG-- I just went to look at their site, and they are in VANCOUVER (at the Commodore! Awesome venue!) this Friday!

This Friday is PAY DAY! I took Monday off for the hell of it!

The gears are turning.

Regarding the Scissor Sisters' Vancouver show at the Commodore Ballroom, it has been sold out for weeks.

However, if you do manage to get tickets, it will be worthwhile. This will be my third show: one in Vancouver, one in New York City, one in Vancouver again.

John: d'oh. I really should have known that.

I obviously let my excitement get the better of me, there.

To date, one of the best shows I've ever been to was the Basement Jaxx at the Commodore. Such a wicked place.

It's okay to name-drop, as long as you do it with ironic self-awareness and a sense of humor. Congratulations on getting it right this time. :-P

why do yo love them? comfortably numb was not meant to be played that way. they look cool. but it's heresy.

Posted by: hunter at January 27, 2005 1:34 PM

I love them for many reasons, and Comfortably Numb isn't even in the top 20 as to why, it was just the best performance I've seen of them playing it.

Also, holding some songs to such a high standard is bound to lead to disappointment down the road.

Scissor Sister's show in Vancouver, Canada last night had so much energy. Even though it's the third show for me, it's always a different experience.

I agree with Kyle that "hey willpower", the opening act for Scissor Sisters was not the best choice. Best act to open for Scissor Sisters so far: VHS or Beta. Talented musicians and catchy pop songs make them the perfect complements.
